A couple more things I got in Turkey this year

Here’s a couple of photographs of some stuff I bought in Turkey in September 2012. The first is of a rustic pestle and mortar I bought in the farmers market in Akyaka. The second is of some little Afghan spice pots I got in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.

Jug in the form of a sheep, from Anatolia

I bought this jug in the form of a sheep a couple of weeks ago in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. It came with six little cups, also carrying the wool motif. The shop I got it from was in Afghan Street, though the seller insisted it was from Anatolia.

Daily diary photos from a trip to Turkey

I’ve just uploaded the 18 daily diary photos from my recent trip to Turkey, to Blipfoto. Blipfoto is a photo journal which lets you publish one image each day. Photos must have been taken on the date they are uploaded against.

Here are all 18 photos. I will be uploading plenty more in due course, but I took well over 600, so they’ll need some sorting through first.

AllTrips uses my photograph (Montana vernacular architecture)

In 2010, I did a road trip from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Yellowstone National Park. Once at the park I stayed in the town of West Yellowstone, Montana. Whilst there, I took some photos which have duly been posted to Flickr.

Anyway, yesterday, I was contacted by Lisa from AllTrips.com, because they wanted to use my photo of the West Yellowstone Human Services Centre on their website, and I am happy to oblige.

This is one of a small group of lovely vernacular buildings in the centre of West Yellowstone. As a Londoner, to think that I travelled to this romantic-sounding place, Montana, and got to experience such awesome great American landscapes throughout the journey, well, it still blows me away. I really hope I can get back to that part of the world again one day.

4 photos taken in Kingsway Underpass

Here are four photographs taken inside the Strand Underpass in London.

I went to have lunch with a friend today. He works in Bloomsbury and I was driving up from south London via Waterloo, so I crossed the river using Waterloo Bridge and then took the Strand Underpass to get up to Holborn and Russell Square.

I’ve taken photos as I’ve driven through this tunnel a couple of times before, and once again had my camera out today to shoot a couple more and I’ve posted them all here.

Something about this road tunnel just makes me want to take pictures.

The A301 Strand Underpass allows northbound traffic from Waterloo Bridge heading for the A4200 Kingsway to avoid the Strand and Aldwych. There is no equivalent southbound facility. The underpass utilizes the former Kingsway tram subway which closed for tram use in 1952. The tram subway was converted, and the underpass was constructed, by John Mowlem & Co and opened in 1964.

Photographs from Luxor, Egypt (2004)

In December 2004 I went to Luxor in Egypt with my first digital camera, a 4.0 megapixel Canon Powershot A80. It was before I was serious about photography and I wasn’t that impressed with the results, mainly because I hadn’t developed my ‘eye’ and didn’t know how to make the best of them.

Eight years later, I’ve sorted through the photos I took then and found much that is interesting and have uploaded a load of new images to my Egypt set on Flickr.

A traffic jam on the A3 (photos)

Last Friday I got caught in a queue of traffic on the way to work. This is a set of photographs I took within a few hundred metres on the A3 in south-west London over the course of about an hour.

Castle Hill

Man-made Castle Hill in Brailes, Warwickshire, is a prehistoric burial ground that was used as the mound for a Norman motte-and-bailey castle. Brailes (spelled Brayles in early historical documents) is a civil parish about 3 miles (5 km) east of Shipston-on-Stour in Warwickshire, England. It comprises the two villages of Lower and Upper Brailes but is often referred to as one village as the two adjoin each other.

Photos and videos of rural Hungary in winter

Frozen landscape in Western Hungary

At the beginning of February I went with my mum to a family gathering in Ösi, Western Hungary to celebrate my grandmother’s 95th birthday. It was pretty cold (at least -10C plus the windchill) so I stayed mainly indoors and took lots of photos and a few videos around the farm - in the house, the workshop, and around the back yard.

Recently published: one of my photos of Petra, Jordan

One of my photos of Petra, the ‘rose red city, half as old as time’ in Jordan has been published in the North magazine winter 2011/12 edition, 'the north of Scotland's premier lifestyle magazine'. It's the one on the bottom right, of Al Siq, the 1.2km long gorge that gives access to the ancient city.

A new playlist of videos made in Madeira

I’ve just added a new playlist of the videos I made in Madeira earlier this year. There are 5 short films so far, and I may add one or two more in due course.

Cabo Girão is a lofty sea cliff located along the southern coast of the island of Madeira, in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira.

A diamond-shaped sea-cliff escarpment ranging from 560 metres (1,840 ft) to 589 metres (1,932 ft) above sea level, Cabo Girão lies between two river-valleys that flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The escarpment/cliffs extend approximately one kilometre in length and the cliff reaches from approximately three kilometres between the urban sprawl of Câmara de Lobos and the river-valley of Quinta Grande...

Reciprocal linking: 2 sites featuring me (a country torn distant son)

This week I came across a couple of websites featuring my work, Analog: Radio: Transmission, and Flying High.

The first is a site called Analog: Radio: Transmission. The aim of this blog is to draw attention to the relentless technological advancement of 21st Century civilisation. The author states that the overriding theme “is to show our unyielding tendency towards progress, no matter what the cost. Like a child obsessed with what’s behind the only door that is locked in the creepy house or an adults temptation to press the ‘big red button’, we seem to just have to tinker and look to see what might happen.”

My video ‘Button’ has been used in this entry, and I think it is entirely appropriate and illustrates the theme of the site well. Kudos to Dr Analog.

New photographs and videos from Turkey

Following a visit to Turkey in September, staying a week in Istanbul, and a week in Simena on the south coast, I have created sets of photographs and videos taken there.

There are at least 300 photos (edited down from nearly 800) but I am still adding a few more as I go along - that stuff takes time! There are 9 videos in the playlist.

Photographs taken around Lulworth Cove in Dorset

I’ve created a new set on Flickr of photographs I took on a recent trip to Dorset. I stayed in West Lulworth near the cove, on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in Dorset, southern England. The cove is one of the world's finest examples of such a landform, and is a tourist location with over 1 million visitors a year. Nearby is Stair Hole and the rock arch of Durdle Door, which I also visited and photographed.
